‘This is just the beginning’: Samsung unveils the new Galaxy TabPro S

January 8, 2016

The International Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2016) featured some major tech announcements, and as expected, Samsung Electronics were among the event headliners, with their introduction of the 2-in-1 Windows 10 premium tablet: the Galaxy TabPro S. This lightweight tablet (the lightest of its kind) is addressed mostly to business customers, but with its integration of the most popular features of laptops and tablets, this device could well replace most PCs.

It’s a great time to be a tech enthusiast. Products are not only becoming more diverse, but also more accessible. There are options at almost any price range. Because of this variety of choices the customers have nowadays, tech producers are faced with greater challenges than ever before. It’s not enough anymore for a top product to just be great. It has to be innovative as well. CES is a great opportunity for such innovations to be announced or even tested. Showcasing more than 3,600 exhibiting companies, the CES gathers more than 150K attendees from all over the world, including manufacturers, developers and suppliers of consumer technology hardware, content, technology delivery systems and more.

Alanna Cotton – Vice President at Samsung Electronics America, introduced the company’s new additions. After a few mentions of the company’s most recent achievements (Galaxy Edge, Gear S2, and Gear VR), Cotton announced Samsung’s new additions for the beginning of this year – the Gear S2 Classic and the Galaxy TabPro S. According to the company’s VP, all the wearable Gear S2 products will get important upgrades in apps and iOS compatibility (the stylish Gear S2 Classic included).

There’s a new tablet in town, and so far it looks impressive. The Galaxy TabPro S is a result of the partnering between two tech giants: Samsung and Microsoft.

“Partnering with Microsoft was a clear choice when developing the Galaxy TabPro S,” said Alanna Cotton. “It delivers the next stage in mobile productivity, by incorporating Windows 10, and leveraging the enormous network of Windows developers. Galaxy TabPro S will be the thinnest and lightest 2-in-1 tablet on the market today.”

Where do the premium tablets fit in?

In the past year we kept seeing an increase in the replace-the-PC phenomenon. Tech producers launched different types of devices – more portable and practical, meant to replace the classic PC. Whether we’re talking about an advanced tablet, or a laptop, the developer’s goal is the same: to create a device that does everything your home PC can do, only better. The premium tablet has become one of these possible PC replacements.

“Galaxy TabPro S balances the best of Samsung’s Galaxy Tab with the wealth of features on the Windows 10 operating system for the most advanced tablet experience on the market,” said Dongjin Ko, President and Head of Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics. “We’re thrilled to be working with Microsoft Corp. to deliver a 2-in-1 tablet that truly allows people to enjoy productivity and connections that matter most, through a seamless mobile station designed for all purposes.”

Design

Most tech developers try to please all kinds of users when creating a product, and Samsung’s new device makes no exception. The whole point of a tablet that tries to replace your PC is to improve your overall mobility and efficiency, therefore the Galaxy TabPro S addresses users who seek to maximize their productivity at home, in the office, or on-the-go. “The tablet delivers full PC functionality with Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Pro for business, so that consumers and business users alike can enjoy all the features and functionality of the Windows 10 operating system, as well as compatibility with their existing IT infrastructure,” said Samsung officials.

We have stated before that according to Samsung’s VP, the Galaxy TabPro S is the lightest device of its kind, only 6.3 millimeters thin and weighing just 693 grams.

The full-sized keyboard cover for better usability comes included with the device. The product’s official press release mentioned that the keyboard’s touchpad emulates that of a PC to provide easy control – even when used in Stand Mode, with a flexible hinge enables optimal, dual-angle viewing for the clearest display in any circumstance. Moreover, the Pogo pin on the Galaxy TabPro S keyboard eliminates the need for pairing or charging separately.

Display

Speaking of crystal-clear display, Samsung’s new Tab is equipped with the very first Super AMOLED display for Windows to the market. The multitouch screen and the deeper color contrast with 94 percent of natural tones show true-to-life colors and more precise details for a best-in-class viewing experience. “The lightweight, power-efficient 12-inch AMOLED display enables users to enjoy gaming, movies and other popular entertainment with unprecedented clarity and color accuracy,” said Samsung officials.

Performance and specs

Galaxy TabPro S delivers Samsung’s advanced technology to maximize performance and power efficiency. It is the first tablet, powered by Windows, to support LTE Cat 6 for the fastest and most advanced connected experience. With enhanced fast charging features, Galaxy TabPro S’s battery can fully charge in just 2.5 hours, and offers up to 10.5 hours of battery life* for all day use. For power-driven performance, Galaxy TabPro S is equipped with the latest generation Intel Core M processor, designed for a fanless 2-in-1 tablet, featuring only 4.5W of power consumption to eliminate noise disruption and maximize efficiency.

To enhance productivity, a multi-port adapter (HDMI, USB Type A & C) and Bluetooth Pen are available for purchase separately. Galaxy TabPro S will be available globally, starting from February 2016. Samsung products are still among the top of the tech chain, but with all the recent releases from competitors, it felt like the company needed a new product designed for consumers and business users alike. The Galaxy TabPro S might just be that spark that keeps Samsung relevant in the battle of the business tablets.
