China has embarked on an ambitious journey to lead the global advance in artificial intelligence and robotics with the inauguration of its first heterogeneous humanoid robot training base in Shanghai. Named the Humanoid Robot Kylin Training Ground, this state-of-the-art facility is managed by the Shanghai-based National and Local Co-Built Humanoid Robotics Innovation Center in conjunction with Humanoid Robot (Shanghai) Co. Capable of training over 100 humanoid robots simultaneously, the primary objective of this center is to expedite the implementation and commercialization of cutting-edge robotics technologies. By 2027, the training ground will aim to train 1,000 general-purpose robots, marking a significant stride in the field of AI and robotics. This initiative has strategic motivations as it not only addresses China’s pursuit of technological dominance but also responds to societal challenges like the aging population.

In a significant move preceding the establishment of the training base, the Chinese company AgiBot launched the largest humanoid manipulation dataset designed to enhance AI robot training. Tailored training environments catering to various sectors such as intelligent manufacturing and public services underscore the center’s potential to foster innovation and drive industrial upgrades. Collaborating closely with businesses, the training base aims to create a seamless synergy that accelerates technological advancements. Partnerships with Shanghai-based manufacturers like Zhiyuan Robotics and Kupas Technology Co. are notable in this context. These alliances are instrumental in pushing the boundaries of data collection, aiming to gather 10 million high-quality physical data entries by the end of 2025, thus establishing a robust heterogeneous embodied dataset poised for multifaceted applications.

Further amplifying its impact, the training center’s endeavors align precisely with China’s policy framework that champions humanoid robotics. Advanced embodied intelligence and autonomous technologies empower humanoid robots to undertake more sophisticated and adaptive operations, charting a course for technological breakthroughs. The anticipated introduction of the “Deep Snake” robot model stands as a testament to this progress. Market projections portray a promising trajectory for China’s humanoid robot market, with its value pegged at 2.76 billion yuan in 2024 and expected to escalate to 16.7 billion yuan by 2025. This upward surge is predicted to propel the market to an astounding 86.1 billion yuan by 2030. Local governments across China are fervently supporting this growth through comprehensive policies that bolster innovation, infrastructure development, talent cultivation, and financial incentives. Zhejiang Province, for example, has set an ambitious target to produce 20,000 humanoid robots annually by 2027. It aims to achieve a core industry value of 20 billion yuan, with an ancillary industry size reaching 50 billion yuan.
