Protection Technologies in an Increasingly Data-sharing World

As digital transformation advances and cloud migration becomes widespread, data protection technologies are becoming ever more important, explains Michela Menting of ABI Research.

For a long time, data protection has been the purview of selective protection in terms of both subject and location. The protection of intellectual property and trade secrets, for example, has been a key driver of data protection solutions, with corporate interests pushing that narrative. Beyond that, personally identifiable information (PII) and privacy concerns have been the subject of decades-old regulation. In some countries, compliance is region-wide and concerns all types of PII (general data protection regulation (GDPR) in the European Union (EU)); in others, it is sector-specific (system and organizational controls (SOC) and health insurance portability and accountability act (HIPAA) in the United States).
