Sony to acquire Altair Semiconductor to bolster IoT ambitions

Sony Corp. has reached an agreement to acquire Israel-based chipmaker Altair Semiconductor for $212 million, positioning itself to become a serious player in the rapidly approaching Internet of Things era.

Altair was founded in 2005 by Oded Melamed, Yigal Bitran and Eran Eshed, all former Texas Instruments executives. The company specializes in chip technology and software related to 4G LTE. Its chips are said to be known for their high performance, low power consumption and competitive cost.
